National Mathematics Day

HISTORY

National Mathematics Day is observed every year on 22 December in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Born on 22 December 1887, Ramanujan made remarkable contributions to mathematics despite having very little formal training in the subject.

The Government of India declared 22 December as National Mathematics Day in 2012 to honour Ramanujan’s extraordinary achievements and to encourage greater interest in mathematics among students and the general public.

SIGNIFICANCE

National Mathematics Day highlights the importance of mathematics in education, science, technology and everyday life. It encourages students to develop logical thinking, problem-solving skills and curiosity towards the world of numbers.
