HISTORY

Republic Day is celebrated every year on 26 January to commemorate the day the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950. On this historic day, India became a republic, with its own Constitution guiding the country as a sovereign democratic nation.

The date 26 January was chosen to honour the declaration of Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) made by the Indian National Congress in 1930. The first Republic Day was celebrated on 26 January 1950, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President of India.
